Senior Loneliness: Restrictions are lifting but the challenge remains

Now that we have heard the directive from CMS to begin allowing families back into our building it is more important than ever to remember that the loneliness our residents felt through social distancing will likely remain a challenge for seniors. According to Bent Philipson in his article on senior loneliness, “Healthcare providers should take a more proactive role in helping seniors manage their mental health in a safe and healthy way…With social activities and events consistently delayed or canceled for almost a full year, seniors have become increasingly vulnerable to feelings of depression and isolation. Many already struggled with isolation from others, but it only increased due to the COVID-19 pandemic.”

MHCA will be working with the LTC Ombudsman Program and physicians Dr. Susan Wehry and Dr. Rich Marino to engage in weekly ‘office hours' calls to support homes, residents and loved ones during this transition. Stay tuned for more information as we begin to schedule these events.
