Know It, Prevent It, Report It: UTI and C. diff Essentials for Nursing Home IPs
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) and Clostridioides difficile infections (C. diff) remain two of the most common and costly healthcare-associated infections in nursing homes. This session provides attendees with a clear, practical understanding of what UTIs and C. diff are, how they develop, and why accurate identification matters. In addition, we will review the long-stay UTI quality measure, including how it is calculated, what drives performance, and how nursing home practices directly influence a facility’s publicly reported quality outcomes.
Building on this clinical foundation, the session offers guidance on applying surveillance definitions and reporting UTI and C. diff events to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) Long-Term Care Component. This session will review infection vs. colonization, thereby reducing unnecessary antibiotic use, and improve data quality. Attendees will leave with practical tools to strengthen infection prevention practices, enhance regulatory compliance, and use data to drive meaningful improvement in resident safety.
Objectives:
- Describe the surveillance criteria for UTIs and C-diff. infections in nursing home residents.
- Explain the CMS UTI long-stay quality measure, including how it is calculated, MDS coding criteria, factors that impact performance, and strategies for improving accuracy and outcomes.
- Apply NHSN Long-Term Care definitions and reporting requirements to accurately identify, document, and submit UTI and C. diff events.
- Implement evidence-based infection prevention and antimicrobial stewardship practices to reduce UTI and C. diff rates and improve resident safety.
