Program Description:
Proper ICD-10 coding has become a crucial piece of success in long term care. With the Patient Driven Payment Model (PDPM) now implemented for Medicare Part A stays, facilities rely on fast and accurate assessment of the resident, including proper identification of diagnosis and corresponding ICD-10 codes. Coding on the MDS is directly tied to payment for each SNF Medicare covered stay. Failure to accurately identify active diagnoses can directly impact revenue and contribute to compromised quality of care. This program is designed to assist facility leadership in gaining confidence and proficiency in ICD-10 coding to promote accurate reimbursement while supporting quality outcomes in long term care.  You may use this link to view the Event Flyer.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the importance of ICD-10 coding under PDPM and how to use available resources to accurately code to support skilled care.
  • Describe strategies that support diagnosis coding with meaningful documentation in the medical record and on the MDS.
  • Recognize common pit falls in diagnosis coding and how to avoid them.
  • Outline opportunities to more accurately capture items in the Non-Therapy Ancillary (NTA) component of PDPM with coding of active co-morbid diagnosis.
  • Identify strategies for avoiding claim errors and denials related to improper diagnosis coding.
