Intimate Partner Violence / Domestic Violence Training
Attention Social Workers! Have you completed the Domestic Violence training required to renew your license? Beginning January 1, 2020, applicants for license renewal in Maine must demonstrate successful completion of a (one time) 12-hr training in intimate partner violence [32 MRS § 7060 & 32 MRS § 7053 (B)]. This 4-part series was created specifically to meet this new requirement. The course will be offered online (via Zoom) across two full days:
Day 1
Module I ~ Exploring the Context & Behaviors of Individuals who Abuse Their Partners 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM
This training will focus on definitions of IPV/DV, fundamental ethical issues in IPV/DV for mental health professionals, Behavioral Profile of individuals who abuse their partners, Risk assessment tools, screening questions when IPV/DV is suspected, Batterer Intervention Programs, Tactics used by individuals who abuse their partners to avoid accountability.
Module II ~ IPV and Diverse Populations 1:00 – 4:00 PM
This training will focus on the societal context for LGBTQ individuals experiencing IPV; Tactics used by LGBTQ individuals who abuse their partners; Guidelines when working with LGBTQ survivors. Societal context for diverse populations experiencing IPV; Tactics used by individuals who abuse their partners that reflect oppressive and discriminatory policies; Guidelines when working with diverse survivors.
Day 2
Module III ~ Assessing for IPV 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM
This training will focus on assessment tools and strategies in assessing for IPV; psychological and health effects of abuse on survivors; risk factors in assessing for danger; safety planning and contra-indicated interventions.
Module IV ~ Empowerment-based, Trauma-informed practice with Survivors of IPV 1:00 – 4:00 PM
This training will focus on a framework for intervention with survivors that is empowerment -based and trauma-informed. A Maine Study of survivor’s experiences in counseling will also be presented with recommendations for counseling practices.
Presenter:
Amy Coha, MSW, LCSW is a Clinical Professor, and Director of Field Education-MSW program at the UNE School of Social Work. Her social work experience includes working with individuals with mental illness and survivors of Intimate Partner Violence. Coha was Associate Director of the Domestic Violence Project/SAFE House in Ann Arbor, Michigan for 15 years where she was responsible for the shelter program, developed a counseling program for survivors of battering, provided expert testimony on IPV/DV in criminal and civil court cases. and was a subject matter expert for the Michigan Law Enforcement Training Council (MLEOTC). She provided trainings to law enforcement, judges, probation officers, and magistrates. Amy developed an On-Call Team that provided immediate face-to-face support to victims after an arrest was made for domestic abuse. Coha also provided on-going training and consultation to mental health providers on intimate partner violence issues. She developed and teaches and advanced year clinical practice course on intimate partner violence for MSW students at UNE. In addition, she has participated in ongoing university initiatives on interprofessional collaboration on IPV/DV. In 2008 Ellen Ridley of Family Crisis Services and Coha received a grant from the Bingham Foundation exploring the experiences of victims/survivors of abuse/battering when seeking mental health counseling.

After the series is complete, and attendance verified, certificates will be issued to all eligible participants.
