The Director of Nursing organizes, develops, and directs the overall operation of our Nursing Department in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations and standards. This position works closely with the Administrator and Medical Director to provide and maintain the highest quality of resident centered care. Must be available evenings and weekends as needed.

Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:


Plan, develop, organize, implement, evaluate, and direct the nursing service department, as well as its programs and activities, in accordance with current rules, regulations, and guidelines that govern the nursing care facilities.
Develop, maintain, and periodically update written policies and procedures that govern the day-to-day functions of the nursing department.
Make written and oral reports/recommendations to the Administrator, as necessary/required, concerning the operation of the nursing department.
Develop, maintain, and periodically update written job descriptions for each level of nursing personnel in accordance with pertinent laws and regulations.
Develop methods for coordination of nursing services with other resident services to ensure the continuity of the resident’s total regimen of care.
Develop, implement, and maintain an ongoing quality assurance program for the nursing department.
Participate in facility surveys (inspections) made by authorized government agencies as necessary or as may be directed.
Assist the QAPI committee in developing and implementing appropriate plans of action to correct identified deficiencies.
Perform administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, studies, charting, etc., as necessary.
Monitor the facility’s QI, QM, and survey reports.  Assist in developing plans of action to correct potential or identified problem areas.
Assist in calculating the number of direct nursing care personnel on duty each shift.
Serve on, participate in, and/or attend various committees of SJR as required and as appointed by the Administrator and provide written/oral reports of assigned department as required.
Evaluate and implement recommendations from established committees (i.e., Infection Control, Safety, QAPI, etc.)
Schedule and announce departmental meeting times, dates, places, etc.
Meet with nursing personnel, on a regular basis, solicit advice concerning the operation of the nursing department, assist in identifying and correcting problem areas, and/or the methods of improvement of services.
Assume the authority, responsibility, and accountability of directing the social services department.
Determine the staffing needs of the nursing department necessary to meet the total nursing needs of the residents.
Recommend the number and level of nursing personnel to be employed.
Assist the Human Resources Director in the recruitment and selection of nursing service personnel.
Assign a sufficient number of licensed nurses and nursing assistants for each shift to ensure that quality and routine care is provided to meet the needs of each resident.
Delegate to Nurse Managers and Nurse Supervisors the administrative authority, responsibility, and accountability necessary to perform their assigned duties.
Make daily rounds of the nursing units to ensure that all nursing personnel are performing their work assignments in accordance with acceptable nursing standards.
Review complaints and grievances made or filed by department personnel.
Provide complaint/grievance reports to the Administrator as required or as may be necessary.
Review and address departmental performance standards on an ongoing basis and through the annual performance evaluation and stay interview process.
Counsel/discipline nursing personnel as requested or as necessary.
Ensure that departmental disciplinary action is administered fairly and without regard to protected class.
Report occupational exposures to blood, bodily fluids, infectious materials, and hazardous chemicals in accordance with the facility’s policies and procedures.
Ensure that appropriate adverse personnel actions relative to direct care staff are reported to the State of Maine Board of Nursing or CNA Registry as applicable. 
Terminate employment of personnel when necessary, documenting and coordinating such actions with the Human Resources Director and/or Administrator.
Assist in the review and updating of departmental job descriptions on an annual basis.
Assist in standardizing the methods in which social services tasks will be performed.
Ensure all department personnel follow established policies and procedures including but not limited to: Dress Code, Privacy Policies, Safety and Emergency Preparedness Standards, Residents Rights, Fraud and Abuse, Non Smoking Campus, Social Media and Electronics, Workplace Violence.
Conduct departmental meetings as necessary.
Nursing Care
Participate in the selection of residents for admissions to the facility.
Review nurses’ notes to ensure that they are informative and descriptive of the nursing care being provided, that they reflect the resident’s response to the care, and that such care is provided in accordance with the resident’s wishes.
Develops and maintains EMR documentation for use of the nursing department.
Staff Development
Develop, implement, and maintain an effective orientation program that orients the new employee to the department, its policies and procedures, and to his/her job position and duties.
Provide leadership training that includes the administrative and supervisory principles essential for Nurse Managers, Nurse Supervisors and Charge Nurses.
Assist the RN Educator & Quality Specialist in the development of in-service training programs for nursing staff.
Assist the RN Educator & Quality Specialist in identifying, assessing and educating staff on specific competencies as applicable.
Assist support services in developing, implementing, and conducting in-service training programs that relate to the nursing department.
Encourage nursing staff to attend and participate in outside training as applicable/appropriate. 
Attend and participate in continuing educational programs designed to keep you abreast of changes in your profession, as well as to maintain your license on a current status.
Ensure all nursing personnel attend and participate in all required annual facility in-serves training programs.
Safety and Sanitation
Assist in developing safety standards for the nursing department.
Ensure that the department’s policy and procedure manuals identify safety precautions and equipment to use when performing tasks that could result in bodily injury.
Assist the RN Educator & Quality Specialist in identifying, evaluating, and classifying routine and job-related functions to ensure that tasks in which potential exposure to blood/bodily fluids are properly identified and recorded.
Ensure that adequate supplies of personal protective equipment are on hand and are readily available to personnel who perform procedures that involve exposure to blood or bodily fluids.
Monitor nursing personnel to ensure that they are following established safety regulations in the use of equipment and supplies.
Ensure that nursing work areas (i.e., nurses’ station, med rooms, etc.) are maintained in a clean and sanitary manner.
Ensure that all nursing personnel follow established departmental policies and procedures, including infection control practices and procedures.
Develop, implement and maintain a program for monitoring communicable and/or infectious diseases, including TB, among residents and staff.
Develop, implement, and maintain a procedure for reporting hazardous conditions or equipment.
Report missing/illegible labels and SDS’s to appropriate personnel.
Equipment and Supplies
Recommend to the Administrator the equipment and supply needs of the department.
Ensure that a stock level of medications, medical supplies, equipment, etc., is maintained on premises at all times to adequately meet the needs of the resident.
Assis the Director of Facilities in developing a preventive maintenance program for maintaining the nursing department’s equipment and supplies in a sage and operable manner.
Develop and implement procedures for the safe operation of all nursing equipment.
Ensure that all nursing personnel operate equipment in a safe manner.
Develop and implement procedures that ensure nursing supplies are used in an efficient manner to avoid waste.
Care Plan and Assessment
Ensure that nursing personnel refer to the resident’s care plan prior to administering daily care to the resident.
Review nurses’ notes to determine if the care plan is being followed.
Assist the MDS Director in planning, scheduling, and revising the MDS, including the implementation of  CATs & CAAs as needed.
Ensure that medical and nursing care is administered in accordance with the resident’s wishes, including the implementation of advance directives.

The successful candidate must be knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices, laws, and regulations pertaining to nursing care facilities; possess strong leadership qualities; and must have patience, tact, and a cheerful disposition for working with residents, personnel, family, and other visitors.

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Must possess, as a minimum, a Nursing degree from an accredited college or university. BSN preferred
  • Current unencumbered licensure as an RN in the state of Maine or compact license
  • Must have, as a minimum, five (5) years of experience as a supervisor in a hospital, nursing care facility, or other related healthcare facility
  • Must have, as a minimum, six (6) months of experience in rehabilitative and restorative nursing practices
  • Must be a supportive team member, contribute to and be an example of teamwork and team concept
  • Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action
