Opioid & Alcohol Use Disorders in Care Centers

The goal of this program is to give a brief overview of alcohol and opioid use disorders and how they affect our geriatric population, including medication options and how to treat these individuals in a skilled nursing facility or a nursing home setting.

Learning Objectives:

• Define each use disorder and current treatment guidelines.
• Discuss ways to adapt guidelines to a long-term care setting.
• Review mock care plans for individuals with use disorders.
• Examine real case studies for insight on potential residents.

Presenter:
 
Amelia Hersey, PA-C, is the lead provider at New Horizons Detox Unit in Hampden, Maine and one of the lead PAs for Penobscot Community Healthcare’s Community Care and Geriatrics team. She has been taking care of patients in the nursing home for over eight years and during some of that time was running a program for patients with substance use disorder on treatment with buprenorphine who required SNF/LTC placement.  Amelia is on the Maine Clinical Opioid Advisory Board and working with a HRSA grant on expanding access for patients with substance use disorder to SNF/LTC services in Maine.
