Nursing Home Administrator Preceptor Training Program

This Board-Approved Preceptor Training was created for licensed Nursing Home Administrators (NHA) or Multi-Level Facility Administrators (MLFA) who would like to be certified in Maine to serve as a Preceptor for an Administrator-In-Training (AIT).  Among other things, this course includes a review of current Long-Term Care State regulations.

Target Audience:
To serve as a Preceptor, in addition to taking this course, you must (1) hold a license, in good standing, by the Board to practice as a NHA or MLFA, having held such a license, in good standing, for at least three years immediately preceding the commencement of the AIT Training Program, and throughout the duration, AND (2) have had at least five years of full-time employment as a NHA/MLFA in Maine and/or some other state, all pursuant to the appropriate license in good standing. See NHA Licensing Board Rules.

Prerequisites:
There are prerequisites for participating in this State-Approved program. If your certification has expired, or you are seeking to become a NHA Preceptor for the first time, you must complete the following requirements in advance:

  1. Complete the online NAB AIT Preceptor Module Course (and corresponding post-tests) ahead of time, and
  2. Submit a copy of your NAB Certificate to MHCA on or before the date of the program.
There is a $15 charge for the NAB AIT Preceptor Module Course.  In addition, NAB recently overhauled the AIT Program Manual so that it corresponds to the four modules;  you may click here for the link to these resources. Preceptors who are currently certified (and taking this course to renew their certification), are exempt from this requirement.

Presenter:
Eric Pooler, MLA, currently serves as the Operations Analyst for North Country Associates in Lewiston, ME. Eric has over 25 years of experience working in nursing, assisted living, gero-psych and ICF/DD facilities. Eric earned his master’s degree in special education and his bachelor's degree in Secondary Education at the University of Maine. Having been a licensed multi-level facility administrator for over 25 years, he has expertise in RUG management and reimbursement, business development, regulatory compliance, staff development and education, operations management, risk management, behavior management, emergency preparedness and more. In addition, he has served as a preceptor for several administrators over the last 10 years and authored the Board approved Nursing Home Administrator's Preceptor Training Program.
