Group A Streptococcus on the Rise

The Maine CDC is reporting a recent increase in invasive Group A Streptococcus (GAS) infections within nursing homes and long-term care facilities in Maine. The U.S. CDC offers specific guidance on investigating and managing GAS infections in these settings. To assist center in identifying and managing GAS, the Maine CDC has shared its "Invasive Group A Streptococcus Response Information Tool."
 
Given the higher risk of complications for residents in long-term care, even a single case of invasive GAS warrants prompt action. The Maine CDC recommends that long-term care centers develop proactive plans and establish ongoing surveillance processes for detecting cases.
