Survey Tip: Meeting CPR requirements

Maine Nursing Homes have recently been cited for F678.  The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) regulations mandate that skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) must be equipped to provide immediate emergency basic life support, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), to any resident in need before emergency medical personnel arrive. This care must be administered in accordance with the resident's advance directives and any related physician orders, such as Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) orders.
One of the key requirements in the SOM is ensuring that staff are properly trained and certified to perform CPR. Facilities must ensure that staff members are trained at the Healthcare Provider level through recognized programs, such as those offered by the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross.
Ensuring the availability of trained staff at all times is a crucial element of compliance with the SOM's CPR requirements. Nursing homes must ensure they have adequate staffing levels and that those staff are prepared to respond immediately to emergencies.
