2024 State Election Results Summary

In the 2024 Maine state legislative elections, Democrats have maintained control of both chambers, though with reduced majorities. In the House of Representatives, Democrats and Republicans each secured 70 seats, with one seat going to an independent candidate. This marks a decrease from the previous Democratic majority of 81 seats.

Several races remain unresolved, with nine House and two Senate contests heading for recounts. Among these is House District 141, where the race resulted in a tie between Republican Lucas Lanigan and Democrat Patricia Kidder.

Following the 2024 Maine state legislative elections, both parties have selected their leadership teams for the upcoming 132nd Legislature.

House of Representatives:
  • Democrats: Rep. Ryan Fecteau of Biddeford has been nominated to return as Speaker of the House. Fecteau previously served as Speaker from 2020 to 2022 and is expected to bring experienced leadership to the role.
  • Republicans: Rep. Billy Bob Faulkingham of Winter Harbor has been re-elected as the House Minority Leader. Joining him is Rep. Katrina Smith of Palermo, who has been elected as the Assistant Minority Leader.
Senate:
  • Democrats: Sen. Mattie Daughtry of Brunswick has been chosen as the Senate President, marking a significant leadership role within the chamber.
  • Republicans: Sen. Trey Stewart of Presque Isle has been re-elected as the Senate Minority Leader. Assisting him is Sen. Matt Harrington of Sanford, who has been elected as the Assistant Minority Leader.
