4/3/25 Legislative Update - Legislative Update: Thank You and What's Ahead

We want to start with a thank you to everyone who submitted testimony in opposition to LD 979, “An Act to Protect Privacy and Dignity for Residents of Long-Term Care Facilities.” Your voices made an important difference. While we continue to work to ensure the Department's proposed rules don't pass as drafted, your advocacy sent a powerful message.

To keep the pressure on, MHCA is currently running online ads urging lawmakers to reject the rules. But we need your help to keep up the momentum. We are actively seeking op-ed writers, especially those working in direct care roles, who are willing to share their experience and perspective. If you're interested, please email Ben Hawkins at bhawkins@mehca.org. Your story could help shape the outcome of this debate.

Other Legislative News:
  • LD 763: An Act to Improve Long-term Care by Providing Funding for Nursing Facilities
We testified in support of this bill last Friday. It is a crucial piece of legislation aimed at bolstering funding for facilities across the state, and we're actively working with lawmakers to ensure it moves forward.
  • LD 772: An Act to Assist Nursing Facilities in the Management of Facility Beds
This bill has been voted Ought Not to Pass (ONTP) by the committee. While we're disappointed, we will continue to advocate for practical solutions to the challenges surrounding bed licensing and flexibility.
  • LD 980: Resolve, to Create the Commission to Improve the Oversight of the Long-term Care System
This proposal also received an ONTP vote from the committee. We believe oversight and quality improvement are vital, but any commission must be thoughtfully designed with provider input.
As always, thank you for staying engaged in the legislative process. Your participation, whether it's writing testimony, calling your legislators, or sharing your stories, helps shape long term care in Maine.
