I-9 Form Changes and E-Verify Updates

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has released a revised version of Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification, to align with statutory language and updated Department of Homeland Security (DHS) privacy notices. The new form, with an edition date of January 20, 2025, and an expiration date of May 31, 2027, is now available for download. While multiple previous versions remain valid until their respective expiration dates, employers are encouraged to begin integrating the updated form into their systems by July 31, 2026. Notable updates include a change in terminology in Section 1, where “a noncitizen authorized to work” has been revised to “an alien authorized to work.” USCIS has also revised descriptions for two List B documents, although it has not specified the exact changes.

Corresponding changes have been made to the E-Verify and E-Verify+ systems, which now reflect the new statutory terminology during case creation. The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) advises employers to update internal processes, train relevant staff, and prepare for potential audits or worksite visits in response to the changes.
