Scam warning: Beware texts seeming to come from Maine DMV

The Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles and Maine Secretary of State have issued a warning of a scam that is popping up on a lot of people's phones. The text messages claim to be from the Maine Department of Motor Vehicles (note that in Maine it is the Bureau, not Department) and saying they had an unpaid traffic ticket. The message claims that unless you pay your fine that day or the following day, your vehicle registration will be suspended as well as your driver's license. It also says you will face a toll service referral, legal prosecution and credit rating damage.

The message includes a link to click, but it is not a .gov link. This link is a scam and you should not click it. The messages are not coming from the state and you are reminded to not make any payments or provide any personal information. The BMV will never send text messages regarding payments that are due.
