Legislative Update: $20 Million Added for Nursing Home Rate Reform, But Our Work Isn’t Done

Last week, the Appropriations and Financial Affairs (AFA) Committee added $20 million to the state budget to fully fund nursing home rate reform. This funding represents an important step toward stabilizing Maine's long term care system and addressing the serious financial challenges facing nursing facilities.

As the AFA Committee works to finalize the budget in the coming days, two other priorities remain unresolved:
  • Repealing Section UU, which would eliminate essential protections for long term care providers, including timely implementation of rate increases and a predictable rebasing schedule.
  • Providing annual cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) for both nursing homes and residential care facilities to keep pace with rising costs and support fair wages for our workforce.
MHCA continues to advocate for these changes, but your voice is critical. Please take a moment to contact the committee using our action tool: Send a message now
