While Mainers were taking to the polls Tuesday* to cast important votes in the highly publicized Maine primary, a group of nine members and staff from MHCA were hitting the hill, advocating for the needs of LTC/AL/ResCare. The Hill, of course, is shorthand referring to conducting business in Washington DC's Capitol Hill, where Congress meets and laws are passed.
The group meet directly with Senator King (I) and Senator Collins (R), specifically asking for their support on improvements to Medicare Advantage and in modernizing the process and language in Medicare SNF related to counting three-day observation status. These conversations were engaging and meaningful. Both Senators had follow up and clarifying questions on the Medicare conversation and wanted to learn more about the continued workforce challenges, and to hear about the positive and joyful aspects of Maine's LTC community.
The group also met with staff from the offices of Representative Pingree (D) and Representative Jared Golden (D), as the two were quickly pulled away for votes on the floor. These meetings with congressional staffers were equally worthwhile, allowing our team to express our request for support on federal legislation.
Thank you to the team, shown below, who traveled to DC and worked the Hill on behalf of all members.
*And don't worry, we voted absentee.
